The platform

The archetypal RTT platform. Factory rails or a bare roof both convert readily to full-length platform racks, and the aftermarket is deeper than for any other SUV. Body-on-frame structure and a long flat roof suit permanent tent mounting.

What to know before buying

• With a quality platform rack properly installed, every tent in our database is a weight candidate — the rack rating becomes your governing number.
• Factory crossbars are not the same as an aftermarket platform; the stock bars carry much less than the platform racks most 4Runner builds use.
• Before buying anything, open your owner’s manual for the roof-load figure for YOUR model year and trim, then match it against the rack maker’s dynamic rating — the lower number wins.

The method: find your real numbers

1. Owner’s manual: look up the roof-load figure for your exact model year and trim — not a forum number, not a different year’s number.
2. Rack spec sheet: note the dynamic (driving) rating, and the published static capacity if the maker lists one.
3. The lower number wins, and the rack’s own weight counts against the vehicle figure before any tent goes on.
4. Run the result through the load checker with your tent and sleeper count — you’ll get separate stamps for driving and sleeping.
