The platform

The default overland wagon. Most trims ship with raised rails (some years use a swing-out crossbar design), which take clamp-on crossbars easily; a full-length platform usually needs a fit-kit. The long roof gives generous bar spread for fold-out softshells.

What to know before buying

• Raised factory rails make crossbar installs simple, but the rail rating — not the crossbar rating — is often the limiting number.
• The fold-out side of a softshell overhangs nicely off the long wagon roof; mind the liftgate clearance when the tent is mounted far back.
• Before buying anything, open your owner’s manual for the roof-load figure for YOUR model year and trim, then match it against the rack maker’s dynamic rating — the lower number wins.

1. Owner’s manual: look up the roof-load figure for your exact model year and trim — not a forum number, not a different year’s number.
2. Rack spec sheet: note the dynamic (driving) rating, and the published static capacity if the maker lists one.
3. The lower number wins, and the rack’s own weight counts against the vehicle figure before any tent goes on.
4. Run the result through the load checker with your tent and sleeper count — you’ll get separate stamps for driving and sleeping.
