How the math works

Dynamic check (driving): tent weight must not exceed your rack’s dynamic rating. That’s it — and it’s the check that fails most often, because dynamic ratings are the small numbers. We stamp CAUTION when you pass with less than 10% margin, because the rack’s own weight and any awning also ride on the same rating.

Static check (parked & sleeping): tent weight plus occupants (at 175 lbs average each) must not exceed the rack’s static capacity. If you don’t know your static figure, we estimate it at ~3× the dynamic rating — a commonly cited rule of thumb for quality racks, not a guarantee: verify the published static number with your rack maker, and enter it directly when you have it.

What the checker does not do: it does not know your vehicle’s roof-load figure. That number lives in your owner’s manual, varies by model year, trim, and rail package, and we will not fabricate it. The governing limit is always the lowest of: vehicle roof figure, rack dynamic rating (driving) or static capacity (parked). What is dynamic vs static roof load?

Dynamic load is what your roof and rack may carry while the vehicle is moving — it is the small number, because a moving roof load multiplies through bumps, braking, and crosswinds. Static load is what the same roof may carry parked, which is when you are actually sleeping in a rooftop tent. Static capacity is typically much higher — a commonly cited rule of thumb for quality racks is roughly 3× the dynamic rating — but it is a rule of thumb, not a spec: verify the published static figure with your rack manufacturer. A tent must pass BOTH checks: tent weight under the dynamic rating for driving, and tent plus occupants under the static capacity for sleeping.

How much weight can a roof rack hold?

There is no universal number, and any site that gives you one without asking about your setup is guessing. Three ratings stack: your vehicle’s roof-load figure (in the owner’s manual, varies by model year and trim), your rack’s dynamic rating (on the rack maker’s spec sheet, often 100–300+ lbs depending on the system), and the rack’s static capacity for when you are parked. The lowest applicable number always governs, and the rack’s own weight counts against the vehicle’s roof figure. That is why our checker takes YOUR rack rating as input instead of publishing fabricated per-vehicle numbers.

Can you sleep in a rooftop tent on any car?

Mechanically, sleeping is the static case, and static capacities are typically generous — two adults plus a 132-lb tent is within the commonly cited static rule of thumb for many quality rack systems. The real constraint is the drive to camp: the tent alone must sit under the dynamic rating of both the rack and the vehicle roof, and on many sedans and light crossovers that rules out most rooftop tents. Check your owner's manual figure first; if it is marginal, a fast hub-style ground tent is the honest alternative.
